THE TRAGEDY OF A GOOD NIGHT OUT

on

Out for a good night

A drink in the club

Then a takeaway

For my wife and I

But I’m mocked by youths

Outside on the pavement

Loitering there

A menacing group

Bragging and smug

Egging each other

To commit a violent act

I’m suddenly chilled

Knowing for sure

That I’ll not make it

Back home tonight

Where my wife waits

And my children sleep

Then sure enough

With a lunging right hand

I’m knocked to the floor

Silent dark oblivion

Three days later

My family gather around

The hospital bed

Upon which I lay

Comatose and unaware

They unanimously decide

To switch off the machine

That keeps me breathing

And donate my organs

To the sick and needy
